WORLD HERITAGES IN CHINA  
 

China is a country with an history of developing civilization of 5,000 years and a vast territory. Many famous cultural historical sites could be found all over the country. By now, there are 28 of the country's cultural relics and sites have been included in the List of World Heritages by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization ( UNESCO). They are the common heritages and precious treasure of both China and the human being.

 

THE GREAT WALL
Starting out in the east on the bank of Yalu River in Liaoning Province, the Great Wall stretches westwards for over 7,350 kilometers to Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu Province , so it is also called Ten Thousand Great Wall. It took more than two millennium for the Great Wall to be completed, beginning from 7 th Century B.C. Most parts of the Wall were built on the ridges of mountains, looked imposing and magnificent.

THE PALACE MUSEUM
Also called the Forbidden City, It was the imperial palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The entire palace area, rectangular in shape and 72 hectares in size, is surrounded by walls and a 52-meter-wide moat. There are 8,740 bays of halls and rooms in the city. It is the most magnificent ancient architectural complex in China , and the largest and best preserved wooden architectural complex of palaces in the world. The construction began in the 1406.

PEKING MAN SITE AT ZHOUKOUDIAN
It is located at the foot of the Longgu Mountain, in Fangshan District, southwest of Beijing. In 1929, archaeologists discovered a complete skull of an ape-mam who lived here 500,000 years ago.

THE MOGAO GROTTOES OF DUNHUANG
Also called Qianfo Cave ( Cave of 1,000-Buddha), it is located in Gansu Province, about 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City. The Grottoes were constructed on the steep cliff of the Mingsha Mountain, beginning in the second year of the Jianyua n reign period of the Pre-Qin Dynasty (366). The Grottoes is a treasury of arts including architecture , painting, sculpture, religion, and folklore.

MAUSOLEUM OF EMPEROR QIN SHIHUANG AND TWRRA-COTTA WARRIORS

The Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shihuang , the first emperor of China, is located at the foot of Li Mountain, Shaanxi Province, and covers an area of 56.25 square kilometers. The vaults of the terra-cotta warriors and horses are 1,500 meters east of the mausoleum. There were totally over 7,000 pottery figures unearthed there, including soldiers, chariots and horses. It is known as the Eighth Wonder in the World.

THE MOUNTAIN RESORT AND ITS OUTLYING TEMPLES
Situated in Chengde, the Mountain Resort was the summer residence of Qing (1644-1911) emperors and imperial families. Covering an area 5.64 square kilometers, the resort is the largest intact imperial garden in China. There are some 130 groups of structures in different styles in the resort.

TEMPLE, MANSION AND CEMETERY OF CONFUCIUS IN QUFU
Located in Shandong province, Temple, Mansion and Cemetery of Confucius are famous historical sites. It is the largest complexes of ancestral temple in China. And the main building, Dacheng Hall is one of the Three Grand Halls in China. The Cemetery of Confucius is the graveyard of Confucius's descendants. It is one of the famous large-scale Stele-Forests in China.

ANCIENT ARCHITECTURL COMPLEX ON WUDANG MOUNTAIN
Situated in Hubei Province, the Wudang Mountain is a famous Taoism mountain and birth-place of the art of Wudang Boxing.

THE POTALA PALACE
As one of the famous scenic spots of Lamaism, the Potala Palace is situated on the Red Mountain in Lhasa , Tibet . The Palace was constructed in the seventh century, and is the quintessence of ancient Tibetan architecture. The complex is divided into two sections: the Red Palace and the White Palace. It is the treasury of Tibetan culture and arts, and many precious cultural relic were kept here, such as Sutras , I mages of Buddha , and Tangka s, etc....

EMEI MOUNTAIN AND LESHAN GIANT BUDDHA
Located in Sichuan Province, is one of the four famous Buddhist Mountains in China. The Wanfoding ( Summit of Ten-Thousand-Buddha) , main peak of the mountain, is 3,099 meters above the sea level. With the grandeur, unique charms and sceneries, Emei Mountain has been described as” Beauty Under Heaven” since ancient times.
The Leshan Giant Buddha sits on the eastern bank of the Minjiang River and on the western slopes of Lingyan Hill. With the height of 70.7 meters, it is the largest seated Buddhist stone statue in China. The construction of the statue began in 713, and lasted for 90 years.

CLASSICAL GARDENS IN SUZHOU
Suzhou is in the southeast of Jiangsu Province, and is called “ Venice of the East” for its criss-cross rivers and many arched bridges. The gardens in Suzhou represent the quintessence of the gardens built in southern area of Jiangsu Province, and demonstrate the varied styles of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. The gardens are not large but are fascinating in their delicate design.

TEMPLE OF HEAVEN
Lied in southeast of Beijing , the Temple of Heaven was where the emperors of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties worshiped the heaven and prayed for good harvests. Covering an area 273 hectares , it is regarded as one of the greatest sacrifice architectural complexes in the world.

THE SUMMER PALACE
Situated on western outskirts of Beijing, the Summer Palace is the typical classical garden in China, and one of the most famous gardens in the world. Covering an area of 290 hectares, It has both the grandeur of gardens in northern china and the grace and refinement of gardens in southern China.
